Overview

Trinity Church Wall Street, a historic 300-year-old parish in New York City, needed to repair its digital presence after a rushed redesign left the site with usability issues and inconsistencies. As the Design Lead, I was responsible for conducting a comprehensive audit, creating a roadmap for improvements, refining the design, and building a unified design system.

My Contribution
  • Audit & Alignment: Leading a full heuristic and visual audit, translating findings into a phased roadmap
  • Design Refinement: Redesigning global navigation, key layouts, and components for consistency and accessibility
  • System Creation: Building and documenting an updated design system using Figma Variables to unify tokens and spacing
  • Dev Partnership: Collaborating closely with the technical architect and front-end team to align design intent with technical delivery

Process

I began the project with transparency, meeting with Trinity's main point of contact to listen to their frustrations and gather insights that would inform our vision. Next, I conducted a full audit of the site, covering every page layout, component, and breakpoint. The audit identified over 150 findings, which I organized into eight themes, including typography, spacing, visual hierarchy, interactivity, and storytelling.
Instead of simply pointing out issues, the audit mapped a path forward through four clear initiatives:
  1. Systematize the foundation
  2. Empower content teams
  3. Optimize for mobile
  4. Design for emotion and flow
I worked alongside the technical architect to translate the audit findings into a phased roadmap, prioritizing improvements to global navigation, event listings, components, and the design system. Every recommendation tied back to a real user or editor pain point.
Throughout the project, I was involved in:
  • Audit & Alignment: Leading a full heuristic and visual audit, translating findings into a phased roadmap
  • Design Refinement: Redesigning global navigation, key layouts, and components for consistency and accessibility
  • System Creation: Building and documenting an updated design system using Figma Variables to unify tokens and spacing
  • Dev Partnership: Collaborating closely with the technical architect and front-end team to align design intent with technical delivery

Outcome

The audit and roadmap were a turning point for the project, creating alignment and trust between the design team and Trinity's stakeholders. Trinity adopted the audit as the official roadmap for the next two quarters, leading to faster approvals, more focused feedback, and a collaborative atmosphere.
Key outcomes included:
  • Improved navigation with a predictable hierarchy and patterns that editors could maintain easily
  • Redesigned event pages that prioritized key details like date, time, location, and participation instructions
  • A unified design system that addressed inconsistencies and provided a strong foundation for future updates
  • Increased confidence and trust from Trinity's team in the design and development process
By addressing the site's design debt and focusing on user and editor needs, we were able to create a more sustainable, intuitive, and emotionally resonant digital experience for Trinity Church Wall Street's millions of annual visitors.
